“Mahal mo ko, Mommy?” (Do you love me, Mommy?). These past few days, my son would keep asking me this question. My usual response would be, “Of course, I love you, baby, because you’re my only baby!” And then he would hug me and say, “I love you, Mommy!”
Justin just recently learned the word “sweetheart.” He heard his Tito O., my sister’s husband, call my sister “sweetheart” because that’s their term of endearment for each other. Justin asked me one time what “sweetheart” means, and I said, “Sweetheart means love.” I then asked him, “Do you have a sweetheart?” He said, “Yes.” “Who is your sweetheart? He said, “Mommy and Daddy and Tatay.”
There were months in the past when Justin would ask me to sing "You Are My Sunshine" to put him to sleep or we’d sing together sometimes. Then, I would ask him, “Who is Mommy’s sunshine?” and he would reply, “Justin.” “Who is Justin’s sunshine?” and he would say, “Mommy.”
In his own small way, my son already knows how to express his love for us. As his parents, we also make him feel loved all the time. He is our one and only child, and he means the world to us.
