I attended Johnson’s Bedtime Discoveries at Ascott Residences, Glorietta 4, Makati City yesterday morning. I was so glad I went because I learned a lot about why sleep is important for our baby’s development and how a three-step bedtime routine can help us moms give our babies the peaceful slumber that they need. The event was hosted by Ms. Tin-Tin Bersola-Babao. Dr. Luis Rivera of the Philippine Society of Sleep Medicine also gave an informative talk on the importance of sleep in infants.

Why Is Sleep Important?
A good night’s sleep for babies is more than just rest. It is a time that babies are more receptive to growth. Did you know that three times more growth hormones are released during sleep than when babies are awake? Sleep also affects every aspect of a child’s physical, emotional, cognitive, and social development.

Does Your Baby Sleep Well at Night?

Most Filipino parents would say yes to that question, but that is far from the truth. A Global Sleep Survey spearheaded by Johnson & Johnson in 2005 revealed that Filipino babies have the lowest number of night-time sleep hours than their Asian and Caucasian counterparts. Filipino and Asian babies also experience longer night-time awakenings than most babies in Europe and in the U.S.

What Are Some of the Factors That Affect My Baby’s Sleep?

Lack of consistent bedtime routine plays a big part in the lack of good night-time sleep for Filipino babies. Changing hands in putting baby to sleep, from mom to lola to yaya, as well as distractions in the room where the baby sleeps, such as activities and noise levels, are also contributing factors.

Johnson’s Baby Bedtime Routine

To help give your babies the sufficient amount of sleep that they need, Johnson & Johnson came up with the Johnson’s Baby Bedtime Routine, a clinically proven method that stretches baby’s sleep by as much as 23%.

Step 1: A Warm Bath or Punas

A nice warm bath or a simple punas with Johnson’s Baby Bedtime Bath will tell your baby that she is on her way to bed.

Step: 2: A Soothing Massage

After bathing, give your infant a soothing massage using Johnson’s Baby Bedtime Lotion to get her ready for sleep. Touch Therapy has been shown to contribute to healthy weight gain, improve babies’ immunity, and calm babies when they are irritable.

Step 3: Some Quiet Time

After bathing and giving your baby a soothing massage, it’s now time for some quiet moments with your little one. You may begin quiet time by applying Johnson’s Baby Powder. Talk softly to your baby, sing a lullaby, or read her a bedtime story. Your baby will drift off to dreamland in no time.

Our son Justin is being taught to speak in English in school. To facilitate that process, we (hubby and I) would speak to him in English, too, at home. When our son’s in a good mood, he’ll be saying things in English non-stop. Sometimes, he speaks good English like when he says, “Thank you for helping” or “I’m covering my mouth.”

He also has his bloopers, too, which is understandable given that he’s only 3 ½ years old and English is his second language. A few weeks ago, Justin asked me to buy him a toy camera. I bought him a cheap one because I know his fascination for that toy won’t last long. Using his new toy, he pretends to be taking a snap of things in the house. He then pretended to take a picture of his Dad who’s busy using the laptop at that time, so I asked him.

Mommy: What are you doing, Justin?

Justin: I’m picturing Daddy.

I’ve never been to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo before, but given the chance, I would love to be part of this exciting event because of the many wonderful things the show has to offer, such as bull riding, livestock judging, pig racing, barbecue contest, wine competition, and a carnival. A concert featuring some of the hottest names in the music industry also follows the rodeo events. Some of the previous year’s performers were Miley Cyrus, Beyonce, Faith Hill, Bon Jovi, and Tim McGraw.

After the rodeo events, a rotating stage is placed at the center of the ring so that the audience will get a good view of the performing artists. If I were you, I would buy the Action Seat tickets; these seats are located at the sides of the rodeo ring. What’s great about these tickets is that they come with complimentary food and drinks. They’re reasonably priced, too.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is the world’s largest livestock exhibition and the richest regular-season PRCA rodeo event, which is being held annually at Reliant Park in Houston, Texas, USA. Also called RodeoHouston, this show is so popular that it attracts at least 2 million attendees each year. I’m sure you don’t want to miss this year’s show, so buy your RodeoHouston tickets early.

Since our last helper left us in December, the task of general housecleaning every weekend falls on my shoulders. It takes me hours just to dust every nook and cranny of our small condo unit, not to mention my son’s personal stuff. His toys are everywhere, some of which have no use for him anymore because he has outgrown them. So I decided last Sunday to rummage through my son’s toy box and get the toys that he doesn’t play with anymore so that other kids in my parents’ neighborhood could benefit from them. Everything was done with my son’s permission, of course.

Justin’s toys for disposal

The house felt so much lighter without those toys. I should have discarded them sooner. What about you? Have you done some de-cluttering lately?

One of the things we intend to do in 2010 is to visit Manila Ocean Park, the Philippine’s first state-of-the-art oceanarium. That’s exactly what we did yesterday noon.

Giant fish, anyone?

Crocodile

Picture, picture!

Look at those tiny seahorses!

Why aren’t you moving? Are you dead or what?

Giant spider crab

Is that you, Nemo?

Stingray

Here, fishy-fishy!

That’s what you call a school of fish!

Baby sharks

Last stop before going out of the oceanarium

My little jeepney driver

Bye-bye time

We enjoyed our trip but found the tickets a bit too pricey (Php400.00 for adults and Php350.00 for kids 4.5 ft. and below). Manila Ocean Park is located at the back of Quirino Grandstand Luneta, Manila.

I’ve been wearing prescription eyeglasses for the longest time. I take extra care of my eyeglasses because they cost too much, and I don’t have the means to spend for a new pair year in and year out. My current pair is more than one year old, and it cost me an arm and a leg. It will take a while before I can replace this one as I will have to work long and hard to be able to save enough for a new pair.

When I saw Zenni Optical, however, I realized I don’t need to wait that long. Did you know that you can get prescription eyeglasses from them for as low as $8.00? Unbelievable, but true!

Nope, there’s no hanky-panky going on here. The reason they're able to sell inexpensive eyeglasses is because they bring their products straight from their factories to their costumers. That is, they use no middlemen, and no middlemen means they’re not spending for advertising or retail overhead. They also manufacture their own brand.

Picking a pair that matches your needs won’t be a problem because Zenni Optical offers a wide range of trendy eyeglasses. I can finally heave a sigh of relief knowing that getting quality eyeglasses at affordable prices is now possible. If you want to know what I mean, check out Eric’s review of Zenni Optical.

We bought our laptop sometime in October last year. I have mentioned in my previous posts that Justin likes playing online games and watching YouTube videos; now, he’s experimenting with the webcam, too, He gets a chance to do all of these things after my work, which usually ends at 5pm. By that time, he and he alone can use our laptop.

I think this trend will go on for quite sometime because we live in a small place which gets boring for my son at times and because he doesn’t have any playmates at home, except his Dad and me (he’s an only child, by the way), so part of his playtime is fiddling with our laptop (he used to do the same with our desktop). So, yes, this is one of his new favorite things to do every day.

Is he serious or what?

I’m sure almost everyone has heard about satellite TV. For those who haven’t, satellite TV is when TV broadcasts are delivered via a satellite and received by a satellite dish and set-top box. The benefits of satellite TV are simply amazing. You get better picture and sound quality and you have access to more channels and services.

A name you can trust when it comes to satellite TV is Directv, America’s No. 1 satellite TV service. If you’re already a Direct TV subscriber, I know you wouldn’t settle for anything less. But what if you have plans of relocating to a different state? Will your TV viewing be affected by your decision to move out?

You really don’t need to worry because Direct TV service is available in key cities and states in the U.S. There’s Direct TV in California, for example. You can avail of Direct TV service in the cities of Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, and San Francisco, to name a few. Isn’t that marvelous?

Just when I thought Justin would be having an absence-free school week last week, he came down with non-stop cough on Thursday night and with an odd sound at that, which gave him difficulty breathing and sleeping and which caused him to vomit several times. I had to nebulize my son, per his pediatrician’s order. This allowed him a few hours’ sleep, but he woke up again at 4am the next day with the same nasty cough.

According to his doctor, the medical term for what Justin experienced is “croup.” Medline Plus says, “croup” is “breathing difficulty accompanied by a ‘barking’ cough. Croup, which is swelling around the vocal cords, is common in infants and children and can have a variety of causes.” Some of the causes include bacteria, allergies, and inhaled irritants. Acid reflux from the stomach can also trigger croup.

Justin’s doctor prescribed an antibiotic, a cough medicine, a nasal spray (because he also has colds), and nebulizer medications.

mommy moments

When I became pregnant, I feared the day I was going to give birth precisely because I didn’t want to experience pain and undergo surgery for the second time; the first time I went under the knife was when I had an open-head surgery in 2004 for the removal of my pituitary tumor. I delivered via a caesarean section, and the excruciating pain started when I woke up after my Ob/Gyn had stitched up my belly. Any small movement I make brought excruciating pain, which lasted for days. But seeing my son for the first time made me forget what I was feeling. Here are some photos of my son’s newborn days.

I like going to trade shows because this is where I get to see lots of cool stuff, such as gadgets, foods, accessories, novelties, etc. I make sure I check every booth and see what products are on display. Trade shows are also proven to increase product sales; that is why more and more companies are resorting to trade shows to introduce and/or promote their products.

To attract potential buyers, trade shows should be very appealing. One way to entice customers to go to trade shows is by having attractive flooring. Your choices include interlocking, hardwood, vinyl, and adjustable raised trade show flooring.

There are also many styles and shapes to choose from. For example, if you opt for interlocking flooring, you can have foam tiles with or without laminate, free flow tile, diamond plate tile, or circle pattern tile among others. Trade show carpet also adds comfort and elegance to any product exhibit.

If you’re one of the merchants, you can improve the overall look of your booth by using logo mats. Lining up commercial mats in your entry way printed with your company logo makes it easy for the customers to remember your product. You can also add colorful graphics to your logo canopy to grab the customers’ attention. After all, first impressions really last.
