Mesothelioma or asbestosis is a rare form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Asbestos is a fibrous mineral used for electrical insulation, fireproofing, building construction materials, chemical filters, and brake linings. The following people are at risk for mesothelioma: (1) those who work in factories that manufacture asbestos, (2) family members of workers exposed to asbestos in the workplace who bring asbestos fibers home on their, skin, hair, or clothing, (3) those who live near an asbestos manufacturing plant, and (4) smokers. Controlling the asbestos dust in the workplace is one way of preventing mesothelioma. Employers should also provide protective clothing and respiratory equipment to their employees, as well as adequate hygiene facilities, routine medical tests, and training. Those who are directly exposed to asbestos at work are also advised to shower and change clothes before leaving work.
