mommy moments

My younger sister Meann and I cooked up a surprise visit to our parents’ place in Cavite to celebrate Mother’s Day with our mom, our Nanay. I did a last-minute trip to the supermarket to buy ingredients for spaghetti, cooked by yours truly, so we’d have something to eat when we get there. My sister ordered pizza, which perfectly complemented my homemade spaghetti. Meann also bought a bouquet of flowers for Nanay.

We didn’t bring any camera because Meann, our younger brother, Tatay, and I would have to seriously discuss Nanay's heart condition (without Nanay’s knowledge) and her immediate need for heart bypass surgery. We also needed to see for ourselves how Nanay is doing after her coronary angiogram. We reminded her not to do anything strenuous until we’ve talked again to the doctor who did her angiogram.

Because we told Tatay that there are lots of people who are giving financial assistance to help us raise the money needed for Nanay’s operation, he ended up crying. He tried to conceal his tears from us, but his efforts failed. He said those were tears of joy. That was the first time he broke down in front of us, his children. He said he just wanted Nanay to be all right. Because we don’t live with them, our Tatay is the one looking after Nanay, and he’s the one who witnesses how Nanay suffers from frequent chest pains and tachycardia (rapid heart rate).

So, that’s how our Mother’s Day celebration went. It was a bit melodramatic, but we went home full of hope that May is the month that Nanay’s heart bypass surgery will be performed.
